For the riverbank scene we had to create
digital characters for Byrth, Myrth and Detective Deadly Serious.
I’ll take you through the process of
creating one of these characters, namely Detective Deadly Serious.
We began with the character sketches
that Carlos Amato had created.

The final design, posed in various expressions.
The initial sketches were intended
to create an impression of the character, however we also needed
basic expressionless images from which to construct the digital
puppets. Once we had decided on a look for the character that we
were all happy with, Carlos drew front and side perspectives of
his face.

These sketches were loaded
into Maya as image planes for reference and from there we sculpted
the 3D models using Maya’s polygonal modeling tools and Dirk
Bailluch’s Connect Poly Shape (CPS) tools. I’ll describe
the workflow for modeling DDS’s head. DDS’s body was
modeled using these basic principles, with slight adaptations.
