For the riverbank scene we had to create digital characters for Byrth, Myrth and Detective Deadly Serious. I’ll take you through the process of creating one of these characters, namely Detective Deadly Serious.

We began with the character sketches that Carlos Amato had created.

The initial sketches were intended to create an impression of the character, however we also needed basic expressionless images from which to construct the digital puppets. Once we had decided on a look for the character that we were all happy with, Carlos drew front and side perspectives of his face.

These sketches were loaded into Maya as image planes for reference and from there we sculpted the 3D models using Maya’s polygonal modeling tools and Dirk Bailluch’s Connect Poly Shape (CPS) tools. I’ll describe the workflow for modeling DDS’s head. DDS’s body was modeled using these basic principles, with slight adaptations.
