For the first phase of the Feedback Project, we decided to create
a scene from the Feedback play. We wanted to
create a scene as opposed to a montage of images so that we could
test our production workflow against the real demands of a full-scale
production. We also wanted to test our ability to
create engaging characters.
After much deliberation we chose the "Riverbank
Scene" as it is a great introduction to our heroes in this
dark and dangerous adventure.
Prelude to the riverbank
scene
We begin our journey with the introduction of
Detective Deadly Serious, an officer of the Afrikalala Police Department.
Deadly Serious is an underpaid, overworked and overlooked detective
in his mid-forties who would like nothing better than the chance
to work on a big case. However, his superiors think very little
of his detective abilities and so continually relegate him to menial
tasks like looking for lost dogs and helping old grannies open their
jam jars.
To add to his misery, Deadly Serious has been
having a repeat nightmare in which food comes alive and pummels
him to smitherines. He is a grey man on the edge (of what he’s
not quite sure).
One evening, while walking home from work, he
finds himself in front of a run-down hall. There is a play being
performed and the detective sidles into the shadows to have a look.
The play is being performed by brothers Byrth and Myrth from the
Feedback shelter and details a “Food Revolution”. Deadly
Serious recognises their names and recalls a conversation he overheard
earlier in which his superior officer was assigning another detective
the tasks of investigating these supposed “environmental guerillas”.
Deadly Serious sees his chance and sets his mind on following these
eco-terrorists and foiling their devilish masterplans. But before
he can do a thing the hall erupts in chaos. A squadron of black-garbed
goons descend on the place and send the audience, and the brothers,
spilling into the night.
Deadly Serious gives chase through the night
and finally catches up with them at a riverbank early the following
morning.
So begins the riverbank scene...
